RSPCA

The RSPCA is Australia’s most influential, respected and best-loved animal welfare charity, preventing cruelty to animals and actively promoting their care and protection.

Every year, the RSPCA investigates over 50,000 complaints of offences against animals. Our RSPCA inspectors are on the front line every day, working hard to fight animal cruelty and neglect in our community.

RSPCA shelters rescue, rehabilitate and re-home thousands of stray, neglected, abused and unwanted animals every year.

The RSPCA also runs national campaigns to raise public awareness about important animal welfare issues and to keep the pressure on the people who have the power to change them.

Shelter animals
The RSPCA cares for dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes. RSPCA shelters across Australia cared for 69,383 dogs in 2008-2009, with many finding new homes and even more being reunited with their owners. While the RSPCA cared for 66,205 cats and kittens in 2008-2009, the RSPCA provides shelter for all kinds of animals including birds, rabbits, ferrets, mice, guinea pigs, geese, pigs, goats, horses, cattle, sheep, donkeys and chickens.

Vets
Before being offered for adoption, RSPCA pets are checked by a veterinarian and temperament-tested so we know how to find the very best home for them. Pets from the RSPCA are also desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped.

Education
Education is vital if we are to have some hope of improving the treatment of animals in Australia. Community education is an important aspect of the RSPCA's work. Each year the RSPCA visits hundreds of schools and community groups.

Wildlife
The RSPCA is not just about cats and dogs. The RSPCA also cares for injured and orphaned wildlife. Unfortunately, there has been a number of cruelty cases involving native animals in the last year.
